How a Round Works

Every round at the baccarat table begins with placing bets. A player can bet on one of three positions — Player, Banker, or Tie. Once bets are placed, the dealer deals two face-up cards each to the Player and the Banker.

Card values are counted as: Ace = 1, 2 through 9 at face value, and 10, J, Q, K = 0. If the sum of two cards is 10 or more, the left digit is dropped — for example, 7+6=13, but the value counted is 3.

If the first two cards of either the Player or Banker total 8 or 9, that is a "Natural" and the round ends there. Otherwise, a third card may be drawn according to fixed rules. At the end, the side closest to 9 wins.

Bet Types and Payouts

Baccarat offers five main bet types. Each has a different payout and level of risk.

Player Bet

Payout 1:1

If the Player's hand wins, you receive an amount equal to your bet. No commission is deducted. Relatively straightforward and a good starting point for new players.

Banker Bet

Payout 1:1 (minus commission)

A Banker win pays equal to your bet, though a small commission is usually deducted from winnings. Mathematically, this is considered the most favourable of the three bets.

Tie Bet

Payout 8:1

The Tie bet wins when both sides have the same total, and the payout is much higher. However, this outcome is less frequent, so the house edge is also higher.

Player Pair

Payout 11:1

This side bet wins if the Player's first two cards are of the same value. It can be placed separately alongside the main bet.

Banker Pair

Payout 11:1

This bet works when the Banker's first two cards are of the same value. Like the Player Pair, it can be placed independently.

Understanding the house edge makes it easier to plan for longer sessions.

What Is the House Edge and Why Does It Matter

The house edge is the mathematical advantage the casino holds on each bet. In baccarat, the Banker bet has the lowest house edge — roughly under 1% — making it one of the most player-friendly bets in the casino.

The Player bet has a slightly higher house edge, but it is much lower than the Tie bet. While the Tie bet payout looks attractive, its house edge is several times higher — which is why experienced players tend to leave it out of their main strategy.

The house edge is a long-run average — any result is possible in a single session. However, focusing on lower house-edge bets gives your balance a better chance of lasting longer.

Bet Type House Edge (approximate)
Banker Roughly under 1%
Player Low, slightly higher than Banker
Tie Considerably higher
Pair Side Bet Moderate to high

Basic Strategy for New Players

Baccarat relies heavily on chance, but following a few simple principles can make the experience more structured. The points below are a practical starting point for new players.

  • Prioritise the Banker bet — statistically the Banker bet wins more often, and even after the commission it remains profitable most of the time.
  • Avoid the Tie bet in longer sessions — it may feel exciting occasionally, but it is not a strategy for regular use.
  • Set your budget in advance — deciding how much you will play with before a session starts helps limit unnecessary losses.
  • It is better not to try chasing streaks — each round in baccarat is an independent event; previous results have no effect on the next round.
  • Start with low table limits — practising at lower-stake tables first helps you get a good feel for the pace and rules of the game.
  • Play responsibly — reading bdgo's responsible gaming guidelines can help you build safe gaming habits.

Live Dealer vs Digital Baccarat

bdgo offers two types of baccarat. Which you choose depends on your preference and playing style.

Live Dealer Baccarat

  • Direct video streaming with a real dealer
  • Tables open around the clock
  • Option to chat with the dealer
  • Multiple providers including Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live
  • Requires a stable internet connection
  • Table limits may be higher

Digital Baccarat (RNG)

  • Fast rounds — play at your own pace
  • Fair results via Random Number Generator
  • Runs smoothly even on a slow connection
  • Usually starts from lower table limits
  • No live dealer present
  • Score history must be viewed separately

At a live table, a professional dealer deals every card in real time.

In bdgo's live casino section you will find baccarat tables from well-known studios such as Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live, with multiple variants including Speed Baccarat, No-Commission Baccarat, and tables with side bets.

New players usually start with the digital version because there is a little more time to think between rounds. Once you are comfortable with the rules, moving to a live table is straightforward.

Table Limits — How Much You Can Bet

Baccarat tables have minimum and maximum bet limits that vary by table. Generally, three types of tables are available:

Low-Limit Tables

Suitable for practising with small stakes. New players can gain experience here with lower risk.

Mid-Limit Tables

For players with a moderate budget. Tables in this range are available in both live and digital versions.

High-Limit Tables

For experienced players and VIP members. This category offers the option to play with larger stakes.

At bdgo, the limits for any table you choose are shown in the game lobby before you sit down, so you can decide in advance. Using the bdgo app, you can also see all table limits and seat availability directly on mobile.

Tips for Choosing a Table

  • It is advisable not to place more than 2%–5% of your total session budget on a single bet.
  • Before moving to a high-limit table, play at least a few dozen rounds at a low-limit table first.
  • If you have connection problems on a live table, switch to the RNG version.
  • To learn about rules and conditions, see the Terms and Conditions page.

Side Bets and Extra Options

Beyond the three main bets, baccarat also offers several side bets that add another dimension to the game. Alongside Pair bets, some tables also have side options such as "Dragon Bonus" or "Big and Small".

However, side bets generally carry a higher house edge. Until you are confident with the main bets, it is wiser to use them sparingly.

Alongside baccarat, bdgo offers many other types of games. If you are looking for something different, check out the bdgo Slots section — it has hundreds of slot games.

Common Questions About Baccarat

A Natural is when the total of the first two cards dealt to the Player or Banker equals 8 or 9. The round ends immediately without a third card being drawn, and the side with the higher value wins. If both sides have a Natural, the higher value wins; if they are equal, it is a Tie.

After winning a Banker bet, a fixed percentage of the winnings is deducted as commission. This rate is usually 5%, though it can vary by table. Even with the commission, the Banker bet still has a lower house edge than the Player and Tie bets. Some "no-commission" tables charge no commission, but their payout structure is different.

The rules for drawing a third card are fixed and automatic. If the Player's hand totals 0–5, a third card is drawn; on 6 or 7, no card is drawn. The Banker's rules are more complex — they depend on whether the Player drew a third card and on the Banker's current total. In both live and digital versions this is handled automatically, so the player does not need to decide.

The most common variant is Punto Banco, which is what is usually called "baccarat" online. Speed Baccarat has much shorter rounds. No-Commission Baccarat charges no commission on the Banker bet, but the payout is reduced when the Banker wins with a 6. Chemin de Fer Baccarat features a squeeze where cards are revealed slowly. These variants are listed separately in the bdgo game lobby.

Card counting is theoretically possible in baccarat, as in blackjack, but the advantage it gives is very small and difficult to apply in practice. In online RNG versions the deck is reset every round, making counting completely ineffective. Live tables also use many decks and shuffle mid-shoe. Most experts consider it more productive to focus on core betting strategy than to spend time learning card counting for baccarat.
